An acquaintance recommended a diesel fuel additive. He uses it in his diesel truck and claims an increase in power, increased cetane, less exhaust fume, cleaned injectors, and no gelling. Has anyone had experience with this additive in a Yanmar?

Additive

I have used a general (auto/truck) diesel additive in my Yanmar for years. The main reasons I use it is for water disbursement and as a biocide. So far so good.

Improved power, yes

Have had a 1980 Hunter 33 with a QM-15 Yanmar engine for two years now. I first started out with Marina fuel without any additives. The power seemed low and the engine put off a lot of black smoke. These changes were made and the power is way up with no smoke. Use the best Highway fuel that can be found, use a pre-filter fuel funnel (puchased at West Marine) when poring the fuel into the boat's tank. Aslo add a diesel additive to increase power and biobor JF to kill the algae. This combination greatly increased the power of the Yanmar engine.

Careful

Careful which "general"additive you pick. There is one diesel additive used throughout the truck and ag business that has a great reputation for elimination of water adn cetane boost-unfortunately it lacks any biocide and can actual increase algae growth. Use "marine diesel additives" IMHO

Careful II

Yanmar has strict guidelines on additives. Cetane is good for upping the octane, and BioBlob or whatever is good for anti-growth. Fuel Power is recommended for water absorbtion. But each must be exactly administered without any deviation on the amount. Try the Yanmar website for more.
