Ah yes, Poulsbo

I was in Poulsbo Washington too. One of the boats on the hook when the fun started Sunday night. I wasn't concerned about my anchor, it held fine but I was up most of the night making sure that no boats ran over me. That happened to me once before at Poulsbo when a 45-50 foot sailboat drug anchor in a wind storm and got hung up in my lifelines and my anchor was holding both of us. That's why I wasn't too concerned about it holding this time. The 2 BIG Bayliners rafted together about 60 feet directly in front of me gave me the most concern. But when they both woke up and were at watch I rested easier. I did watch 3 big power boats in the 50 - 60 foot range pass just off my port side on their way to the shallow end of the bay with all hands asleep. Fortunately there were 2 hearty souls in small boats circling around waking people up and they alerted the three boats before they went aground. I don't know who they were but they saved several people alot of money that night. All in all, it was a fairly typical weekend on Liberty Bay. We had a great time.

Sailed all weekend in fog and rain!

We sailed 12 hours Hull to Provincetown on Saturday and arrived to be one of only about 6 boats out of the 30 or so that had booked. We slept out in the sun and got nice tans until the thunderstorms came. Then we headed out Sunday morning to go to Gloucester. It was our intentions to see whales on the crossing, over Stellwagen Bank, but the fog was thicker than pea soup- so we didnt see anything....Then we had a great sail from Gloucester back home again on Monday. The winds picked up with yet more rain, and we had her going over 8 knots the whole way home- it was a (wet) blast!! Topped out at 8.74, and were screaming with glee for hours!

Went swimming instead

We stayed in because of the unpredictable New England weather (see earlier posting), so I hung around the marina doing maintenance. I still needed the "boat fix". The power boaters were able to get out when the sun intermittently broke out, so I helped a few of them handling lines when they departed or returned. But one guy (a friend) moved his boat from a temporary slip to his regular slip. He didn't warm his engines enough and his port engine stalled while backing into his slip. That's usually when everyone begins to scramble and reach for lines. His wife threw mw a bow line and I hauled in on it using my body weight. The boat was lighter than I expected and I ended up losing my balance and going into the drink on the opposite side of the floating dock. The water was about 55 degrees (rather refreshing), but the biggest loss was the submerged cell phone I had in my pocket. Salt water is a killer. It cost me $169.00 for a new replacement. Ironically, when I told the clerk in the Cingular store what happened, he laughed and said I was the third one of the day.

Boating Club

We traveled 6 hrs. to met up with a sailing club we have been members of for 10 years. It had been awhile since we had been on one of their crusies. Everyone was out on the dock when we pulled up. No one even said hi so we went and tied up at a floating dock which was about 50' away. No one said a word to us so the next day we turned around and went home before the bad weather came in. I guess I get to keep my dues money that was due in June. For the record it was not a Hunter group we were meeting. They did get the guy who was right behind me a place at the dock along with the next 4 boats.

Still a good weekend!

Didn't want those guys in Poulsbo to think they had all the fun. We spent Saturday and Sunday in Coupeville.. woke to 20/25 kt. winds on Monday morning and had to head into it to get home. Spent the next 7 to 8 hours on a trip that normally takes 4. We had an almost steady wind on the nose showing at 30 to 35 kts. for almost 3 hrs. Slacked off to 20 kts and lower for the next 2 hrs. and then crossed the worst tide rips we've seen closer to Everett. We still considered it a good weekend, but we sure had to work for it.

Naples, FL or Bust...!

Yes, we sailed over the Memorial Day weekend. The plan was to cruise down the Gulf coast to Naples, where we planned to anchor-out, sail the dink (H-90) and visit the city of Naples. Wind wouldn't cooperate, so changed the plan mid-cruise and visited Ft. Meyers instead. Sailed back North, up the Intracoastal to Cabbage Key and overnighted ageain before returning to home port on Monday. The weathere prevented us from sticking to our plan; but, while anchored off Cabbage Key, saw a herd of five or more Manatees about 10 yards off the stern.

Everett Boats

We came down the west side of Canamo Island on Sunday afternoon. After listening to VHF radio we thought it would of been a good time to head home. We talked to a few people that started home on Monday and had to turn around because it was so bad. So of the worse water we have ran across is just outside of Everett at the mouth of the river. It was nice to see that there are 4 boats from Everett here. Some time we will have to meet up at Langley.

petaluma

Cruised the Petaluma River from Redwood City, a round trip of 108nm. Entered a distance race on the way home, BUOYANT's first official race, and finished a disappointing 5th after sailing into a parking lot where I was becalmed for the better part of an hour in the Berkeley slot. Sheesh.

Mighty Fine

Great! Took off Friday - Wed. Sailed Ga. coast and Wassau Sound. Fished alot. Did okay. Too many sharks! Much broken tackle! Great wind. A few showers. Hard to beat my 33. She's still quick! Everyone should have an area like Savannah, Ga. to sail in. Great restaurants, scenery, fishing, people or solitude. The Barrier Islands are GREAT. But don't come!!!!!

Raced in the Figawi, Hyannis to Nantucket

I am surprised to be the first to post a Figawi race sail over Memorial Day w/e. Saturday, we left Hyannis with 250 of our closest boating friends and raced to the island of Nantucket about 20 nm to the south. The weather held out, we had a good sse wind that blew I don't-know how hard due to my wind speed transducer seemed to spin off the mast over the winter. My crew of racers were not much help due to severe hangovers celebrating the night before. We didn't do well but had a lot of fun and a great sail. the sail back Monday started out good but showers and wind gusts forced a wet motor back to Hyannis. Anyone in the New England area that hasn't done this race should really think about it for next season, it's not a serious race but the party on Nantucket is a blast. Also give you some incentive to get the boat on the water earlier than you probably would otherwise.

NFCC Regatta Jacksonville to St. Augustine

The North Florida Cruising Club (NFCC)held a Regatta from the mouth of the St. Johns river to the inlet at St. Augustine. The weather was beautifull but, we had to deal with a great deal of smoke in the air due to forest fires west of St. Augustine. The smoke made it a bit spooky with visibility only a few hundred yards. Everyone made it into St. Augustine safely and we all anchored out near the Conch House Marina. Sunday the smoke was gone and we staked claim to a section of the beach and ate, drank and sunned the day away. The highpoint of the day was a backwards dingy race, no motors allowed and you had to row stearn first, I placed last, guess I better stick with sailing. Bonnie and I brought along bicycles and spent part of the day touring downtown St. Augustine and poking around all the artisan shops that abound in the nations oldest city. The weather on Monday started great but thunderstorms boiled up in the heat of the afternoon. We arrived safe and sound back at Julington Creek #3 Marina by 6:00 PM. I can't wait for the Cumberland Island Regatta this fall!
