Watched the DC fireworks in the Potomac River from the deck of "Coco Loco" our Starwind 223. It rained some but that is par for the course. After a couple of nights in Alexandria we caught the outgoing tide down river with stops at Quantico, Colonial Beach and Kinsale. After a brisk sail in winds of 20 knots and 5 foot seas we arrived at Tangier Island where we stayed for two days. Wonderful people; I thought if we would have stayed another day we would have been asked to become part of the community. One thing the cruising guide did not warn us about was the fact that liquor was not sold in the island. At least you could take a BYO bottle of wine into the restaurants. We had to go when we ran out of beer. The hollywood people were seeking a location to film "Message in a Bottle" and offered the town the opportunity to be it but were turned down by city council and the marina owner. The boat stayed at Solomon Islands, Maryland as we flew home. We met some really nice people, both sailors and power boaters. Broke my heart to see a fellow put $996 of fuel into his boat while I was waiting to fill a 5 gallon can. Ventured into DC but the heat and the tourists drove us away. The Peking duck at Tony Chens in Chinatown was above average.
The point that raised my attention were the markers warning about shallow water. We never found less than 10 ft of water in their vecinity. Here in Florida you see a water depth warning marker and you will be immediately in 2' if you do not heed it. Good trip, we'll do it again.
