Did I get taken?

My Yanmar 3GM30F stopped running about two months ago. Central Marine in Deale, MD said there was water in the injector pump and the injector pump and the injectors needed to be rebuilt. I just paid them $2300 to remove the pump and injectors and send them off to be rebuilt. I drained the fuel tank, replaced the fuel filters, bleeded the lines, and got the engine started myself after they put the pump and injectors back in the engine. The cost broke down to $1500 for the sublet rebuild work then $800 in labor for Central to remove and then reinstall the pump and injectors. Good price, OK price, or did I get taken?

How did such a large amount of water get into the tank causing your pump and injectors to fail?

I would guess that $1500 to rebuild your injection pump and injectors is probably "ok." What I would question is the $800 for labor to remove and reinstall them. Labor rates around Deale run around $85-90/hour so that means the mechanic took around 9 hours. That seems like a lot of time to unbolt the injector pump and injectors and to reinstall them, unless he ran into a problem along the way or there was some kind of access issue with your engine compartment. I'd ask the manager about this. Central Marine seems like a good shop.

FWIW, I had a diesel shop rebuild my injection pump for an Oldsmobile 350 car diesel in 1993 for about $500. I have never had a marine pump rebuilt, but I would think it would be very similar in effort and expense.

Regarding the injectors- how expensive are brand new injectors? I think I've heard that they can run $150-250 each.

And I agree with Warren that 9 hours seems like a lot for a pull and re-install unless there was unusual access issues or frozen fasteners. I would question that time also.

Ask the shop for a break down in hours on the job. My guess is you got charged for every time the mechanice forgot a wrench and had to walk back to the shop to get it. ! ! !

Like the others I'm inclined to think that unless they ran into severe access problems to remove the pump or to remove "frozen" injectors it seems like 9 hours is a lot. I am no mechanic but I just had to remove and reinstall the pump twice to adjust the timing (done by installing or removing shims under the pump itself). The second time I did it in a little more than 3 hours. That 3 hours includes draining the FWC & removing the hoses, pulling the exhaust manifold, and removing all fuel lines. The toughest part is making sure the rack is installed properly when re-installing the pump. As for the injectors, as I said, unless frozen in place severely, removing and re-installing all 3 is fairly easy and shouldn't take much more than 1 & 1/2 hour. I sure would go back and talk with the management. Good luck

My 3GM30F sucked water when the deck fill cracked. It was enough water that the fuel didn't smell like diesel. We cleaned the tank, replaced filters, put in fresh fuel and bled the system. It fired up without much problem after that. This happened six months ago and the engine hasn't missed a beat since. Not sure exactly how long yours sat after it got water in it or other mitigating issues (how is your fuel?), but I have a hard time believing it would really be necessary to replace the injectors. Just my two cents..
