Did I buy right battery size?

Stock battery switching on any Beneteau I have been on is an on/off for each bank and a 3rd on/off for the negative.

Scott, I've explained my battery design in Post #32, didn't I? What makes you think I only have two small batteries? I have a good sized house bank and a small reserve, NOT start, bank. All this is explained in those links I keep posting.

In ALL of our discussions about this, MS & I have been very clear on what we have: large house bank, small reserve bank. NOT two equal house banks. Have no idea where ya got that from.

The assumption that two banks should be the same is way outdated, back before I bought my boat in 1998. That concept, the old two equal house banks, has been shown to be wasteful, since a larger house bank works better than two smaller ones of equal capacity.
Yes, I saw your response ... I don't know what makes you think that I thunk what you think I thunk!:D Possibly because I was responding in part to CR who says he uses just 2 batts of equal capacity to fill out his 2 banks.

You can color me obtuse! I don't remember anybody discussing their specifics with regard to house bank and reserve. When you did, I'm sure I missed it. I actually did think that a reserve bank would be more or less equal to the house bank. If that is the way it was done in the old days, I guess that may just go to show how much older I am than you are!:D

Going back to the original post ... It appeared that the OP was asking about advise for the battery size based on his use of just 1 battery. Most recommended that he add at least one more battery so that he would have a pair of batteries.

So, if you were to equip your boat with just 2 batteries, how would you configure them assuming they are similar deep cycle batteries? Would you combine them on 1 bank for better efficiency and life and not bother with a reserve bank? .... or would you put one on Bank 1 and the other on Bank 2 for reserve?

I think my answer would be that I would combine them on one bank and forego the reserve if I was monitoring the bank (knowing they are healthy by monitoring them).

Mitiempo says that DCP is for small boats where each bank is small and equal. That's not the case. I use it exactly how it is intended. I have 200ah deep cycle using 2 batteries on main bank and a start batt on start bank.
Below are posts by Mainesail concerning the Dual Circuit switch.

If I was more than a daysailor I would configure them as 2 separate banks. No different to me than fuel in an airplane - would you want to be totally out of fuel when the tank was dry or would you want a reserve to switch to?

My preference would be the 2 batteries in one bank with a reserve battery that was large enough for an engine start but not overly so.

All true!

Thanks for that, mitiempo, I remember reading those issues so I have wired my alternator output to the house bank. I also would not combine the start batt if I had a dead house bank ... there is no need to. I've never experienced an internal short, and never heard of one either. I don't worry about a lot of things that maybe I should. I often wonder how I ever survived!

I'll second that.

You know,

I think all has been covered here with respect to batteries. Some however, went off on a tangent & some others posted personal feelings that do not apply across the board. But that's fine, forums is about the mixing of ideas & opinions. Most importantly remember, it's the mixing of information, that becomes the POWER. That's what begets the progression of ideas. Thus, we all win.

There is no ONE right nor, only ONE wrong, all of us sailors have different takes on how we feel or interpret our sailing needs. But remember, all sailing needs differ.

There have been some in this thread that spoke with experience. There were others that spoke from technical expertise. There were posts from inland sailors & open water sailors alike so, sometimes it's like comparing apples to oranges (I believe this was mentioned in an earlier post).

What works, for some doesn't work for all. For me, I know what works for me, others in different environs, what works for them may be different from others. Remember, it's all good, as we are all just trying to flying sideways.

I guess that says it all.
