On my boat (V2751) there is a small clear hose leading from the
grease fitting on the stuffing box into the port side locker.
At the other end (inside the locker and mounted to the side) is
fitted something that looks like it could have been home made.
It looks like about an 8" long section of White PVC pipe with a
bottom in it (connected to the hose) and a top that screws on (like
you might find on a sewer clean-out) There is a small ruler
mounted vertically on the inside.
I'm guessing this thing was intended to be an automatic Oiler and
that the Ruler inside is for checking the level of the lubricant.
There is currently a small amount of grease in the bottom.
Has anyone seen anything like this? Sounds like a great Idea if it
actually works. It would allow one to lube the stuffing box without
having to take up the cockpit sole, and since it was handy access it
would probably be more likely to be maintained.
I wonder what would make it have enough pressure to force grease
into the stuffing box. (does it even need to be forced in under
pressure?) Perhaps, if the grease were 'fluid' enough to drain
easily through the hose, it would have a small amount of head
pressure by being a couple of feet above the stuffing box.
If it is something that works...Any ideas on what type of lubricant
I should fill it with?
NOTE: I've only been fortunate enough to use the engine for about 3
hours since I bought the boat, but I and saw no leaks from the
stuffing box.
