We waited out the windy and rainy day at R. E. Mayo in Hobucken. It was a delightful stop, a place that caters exclusively to commercial fishermen although they let cruisers use the dock for $0.42 a foot and are as friendly as you could ask for. The marine and convenience store has everything a hard working fisherman could want but, if you find something you need as a yachtsman, it’s a coincidence.
The next day’s weather report was for wind on the nose with brisk following winds the next. The Neuse River will be our last chance for a good sail before entering the ditch so we decided to layover. I wouldn’t have wanted to miss R. E. Mayo but a second day with the limited places to walk and mosquitoes much worse than the Little Alligator River would have been just too much of a good thing.

I found a promising little town up the next creek which looked like the kind of place seldom visited by cruisers rushing north and south. It also had a post office with Lee and Lynn needed so we made the 10 mile run around and anchored.

When we landed in the little town of Vandemere, we started making jokes about the Andromeda strain, thinking it was just a small and sleepy place. There wasn’t a person or car in sight. When we got to the post office, we found it closed with piles of insulation and drywall out front. Then, we realized that it wasn’t trash days and those piles in front of every house going up the street were the same stuff. We saw the FEMA trailers and blue tarps next and realized that we were looking at the damage from Irene.

A resident saw us walking around and drove over to talk with us. The eye passed directly over the down. There wasn’t a lot of wind damage but the low pressure sucked up a ten foot storm surge. It was predicted to be six and the additional four feed caught a lot of people unprepared. Many have now moved to Oriental or other nearby places.

This was, and will be again, a very nice little corner of the world but our small town exploration turned into a sobering day.

I see that it is a little chilly(41) there this morning. I also see forecast winds of 12 from the north, better go sailing. I spent sixteen months in the area, mostly at Matthews Point across from Oriental. Five weeks were on the hard at Sailcraft in Oriental, a first class boatyard. I'm guessing you will find Taylor's Creek in Beaufort a hard place to leave(http://www.tourbeaufort.com/photo.htm).

Hey Roger,
Enjoying your trip report..

When you get to Taylor's Creek, watch out for a sailboat near Green #9, believe the boat name is "5 naked ladies". He plays LOUD hard rock at 1:00 in the morning when he gets back from bar tending.....

Oriental.. Outstanding place. Loved the "dragon eggs" along the waterfront .. and the Aderondak chairs with the sailboat backs.. Have to go to the consignment shop downtown.. and the Silo Restaurant, The Village Restaurant buffet, M&M's .. The Bean, the Treasure Company...Take the dink (with engine) and explore the canals and marinas.. My friend, with whom I've sailed a bit, has a Beany Toe 42 there .. Really quaint place.. A first for me there was looking out of a port and seeing snow.

Roger's underway. Course is directly for the ICW across the Neuse. Sure didn't have time to check out Oriental. I guess the call to Taylor's Creek was too much.

Visited the consignment shop and had a nice walk around town. Saw the artesian well (now capped) with the concrete benches and the huge tree grown right around the benches. It must have been an amazing spot before the tree died.

I'll be spending a lot more time in Oriental and places like it on the return. We're pushing a bit now to keep ahead of the cold and also trying to get to where we want to be for Christmas.

Now I see Roger anchored back in the bay before the bridge. What happened, why did you not got through the lift bridge and around to Taylor Creek? If you do spend time there I always check out the wooden boat works across from the museum. Just the smell is worth the price which is free. But there is a bucket for donations. Spent many hours walking the docks right there in front of the Captain John Smith memorial. He died in the Challenger disaster. The store that I like is the ACE Hardware across the bridge in Morehead City.
