Hello Bill again, Thank you for your earlier suggestion regarding the back-winding of my main. I have since ordered a new 130% from Doyle! My new question is with regards to tuning my 7/8 rig sloop. I am looking for a reliable reference book or VCR tape that will take me though the tuning process. The mast presently has a slight 's' curve in it when viewed from the side. Do I need a tension scale? This spring, I intend to loosen all shrouds then begin the tightening process beginning with the lowers. Can you suggest any articles or even fax me something if there are no text references. Thanks.

Rig Tuning

George, Loos guages are a great way to duplicate a certain rig tune on a particular boat. If you had a one-design I would recommend getting one. For your boat however I don't think it is necessary. There are many books on tuning but the basic process is this: 1. Loosen all shrouds at the dock. Center masthead/hounds with a tape or halyard. 2. Hand tighten shrouds using a tape to ensure that the masthead or hounds is centered. Measure to the rail or the chainplates. 3. Go sailing in about 10 kts of wind. 4. Gradually tighten the cap(upper) shrouds while tacking upwind, making sure that you put the same number of turns(it's easier to tighten the leeward side) on each side until there is no slack in the leeward cap shrouds. 5. Keep tacking upwind and tighten/tune the lowers until the mast is straight fore and aft on both tacks. You can check by sighting up the luff groove. Thanks, Bill C. Doyle SF
