Desperate for a solution to a leak at the back of the combi...

Hi all, I have reached the Ria de Vigo and I am parked in a bay right at the top end - under a bridge and turn left. Enselada de Simon or something. I am plagued by this engine and it is causing me a few problems. If anyone can offer advice (except buy a new engine - no money left!) I would be eternally grateful.

1. The oil leak from the rear of the combi unit is becoming serious. I have to check every 20 mins or so while motoring and mop up the oil which is swilling about under the engine. It exits from the area where the control tube enters the back of the combi unit - just were I fitted the new oil seal! I am doing less and less motoring and I am having to wait for favourable winds but the famous Portuguese Trades (N) seem to have gone on holiday. I am getting to the stage were I do not feel confident about the engine which is a bit daunting at such an early stage in my nautical career!

Hi John

I expect it is the seal between the combi and the the reduction gearbox. This is a large seal that came with teh combi kit.If alignment is out on the engine then it will keep happening.

Cheers

Oh Bugger... I replaced that one as well but I guess you are right
and engine oil is leaking from the engine into the combi and then into
the boat! I may try letting the oil level go down a bit - keep at
above the min level on the dipstick but not to the "full" mark. That
may help to slow it down.

Steve, can you recall how much a new engine and all the associated
gubbins costs? I guess you know the boat well but I think I would
need a complete new set up from engine to prop including engine
controls, stern gland thing, stern bearing, alternator etc.. etc...
and how long would it take me to fit (about?)

Should have taken your advice and done it at home! Hindsight is a
wonderful thing....
