Depthsounders ????

My very old depthsounder has gotten to the point where I can't read
it any longer. It came with the boat upon purchace and is a Signet
depthsounder with a thru-hull transducer. I have looked everwhere I
could think but cannot find another Signet anywhere. Is it possible
to replace the unit with another brand sounder but keep the
transducer? I guess what I'm asking is, will the transducer work
with most any unit or am I just wishing here. Any suggestions will
be appreciated.

Hi Robert
I have never replaced a transducer in any of my boats. I cut and splice the
wire and they work well as they all typically use the same frequency. My
vega is now on her 3rd depthsounder and using the same transducer that came
with the origional sounder. It is essentially a speaker, that fires out
sound and waits for the echo, And they dont seem to mind mix and match for
me.

That's great Claude. I was hoping that was what I might be able to
do. What brand depthsounder do you use or prefer?

Robert,

Although Claude had no problems, I discovered that not all transducers
are electronically equal. When I replaced the antique depth sounder
in my Vega I tried to use the existing one and discovered it was a
different frequency and incompatible. Most modern instruments seem
to require 200 kHz and will not work with anything else. I think the
old one was 150 but I can't recall for sure.

Claude,

I'm curious as to what depthsounder brand are you using now? It must
be similar to the freq. that everone is talking about and if you can
tell me the brand name it may save me alot of time and money.

I had an old Ray Jefferson in the boat, the one with the spinning wheel and
LED, When the bearings went I bought another spinner, dont remember the
brand but I do remember it was a 50 Hertz model and the old one was 200. I
still used the same transducer and spliced the wires, Worked well past 100
ft and better than the origional. Ok so moron me one day accidentally hooked
up the battery backwards and pop goes the weasel. Now I buy a 3rd one and
put it in, off brand made in Tiawan brand x that was 150htz and again the
transducer worked. That one lasted a year before refusing to turn on. For
christmas I get the cheapu Hummingbird and dont know it's frequency but
wired it to my ancient transducer and again it still works. Since I deliver
sailboats and yachts, and many are stripped of electronics I bought a second
hummingbird and a roll of speaker wire. Knock on wood in every boat that has
a transducer of whatever flavor the hummingbird cheapie fishfinder locks
right on and runs.

Your milage may vary...

Hi
I just installed a Furuno fishfinder 4100 I believe. I went with a fishfinder so I would be able to see the contour of the bottom.
I elected to istall a Transducer that is in the boat and reads thru the hull. I came with a cup that I bonded to the hull and then filled with mineral oil set the transducer which is beveled
on bottom so when mathed up correctly to the cup will read straight down. This setup compensates for the angle of the boats bottom.
Works great at 200 scale. Has many good features including link up with GPS"s
Best regards to all
