My Datamarine depthsounder is showing the letters MSD when I turned it on the other day. The boat is still sitting on its winter cradle and I am wondering if this would be a factor. Thanks
Maybe it is trying to tell you it has CRAPPED OUT and you should be looking for a new unit....Only joking....My guess is that it is sending a message telling you that it can't sound anything as there is no water between it and the bottom to sound thru....
My Datamarine sounder reads the same at times. It usually seems to happen when the boat is under power and moving fairly fast. The correct depth reading comes back up in a few moments.
I had Datamarine knot/depth meters on my previous boat, a C&C. The Depth sounder would read "MSD" now and then and I think there was something in the manual indicating that meant "Mud/Sand/Dirt." I thoughtthat meant that the transducer was fouled either directly on its surface or what it was "looking" at. It always cleared up when I was in cleaner or deeper water.
Whenever I cross the wake of a tug pushing a barge. Guess it's because the water is too turbulent to get a reliable reading.Think I've also read that depth sounders won't work through air -- must be on/in water.
