I am attempting to find a replacement for my (Horizon Standard) DS1 Depth Sounder. I was looking to replace it with the DS45 model (to fit the 4 inch cutout). No one seems to carry the DS45 anywhere!!! Does anyone have suggestions as to another brand that will fit the (4 inch cutout).

Did you try West?

I just checked West Marine's online site, and the Standard DS45 is listed, with a price of $239.99. A couple other online stores list it for a few dollars less. Google it! Peter

I have found Consumers Marine Electronics

to stock an extensive variety of marine electrical parts. They don't have everything on website but their catalog is very large and you can always call.

depth sounder vs. fish finder

Hello, My boat came with a non-working wind instrument, a poorly working speed instrument, and a perfectly functioning depth instrument. I would like to remove the current instruments and replace with newer stuff. Is there any reason to not use a fishfinder? It seems like they are a lot cheaper than dedicated instruments and provide more information too. The Navman 4150 gives you depth (obviously), as well as letting you see the bottom. Plus you get speed, speed log, water temp, and even battery voltage. All for a lot less than just a depth gauge. Am I missing something? Thanks, Barry

Depth Finder

A few years ago I contacted the repair division at 1-800-366-4566 and sent mine back to be repaired. They had a customer loyalty program at the time and sent me a new DS 45 for $100.00 plus S&H, plus returned my old one to me (??) I had to purchase a new transducer because the one for the DS 1 was not compatable. As I remember the thru hull had to be enlarged due to the size of the new transducer. Try them they may still do this.

Barry, I swaped out by DS for a FF

for the reasons you mention. My research tells me that a FF with a speed reading means the finder accepts input from a paddle wheel which is in addition to the depth transducer so you are still dealing with the issue of fouling the paddle wheel. I don't think the transducer can read speed from bouncing the sound waves off the bottom, though you would think someone would figure how to do this. If I am wrong someone will pipe up. I went with a Garmin 250 and got the flush mount with power/data cable package and transome mount transducer, with temp capability. SO I ended up with a flush mount in the forward cockpit/cabin trunk next to the other iinstruments. Boat has gone through a couple of sets of instruments changes, round and square cutouts, such that PO just put a 3/8th panel to cover the old cutouts and mounted the replacement instruments in the panel. Looks fine. I didn't want to haul the boat just to install a new thru hull transducer so I went with the in hull or "shoot thru hull" set up, putting the transom mount transducer in the forward bilge. you can do this if no coring i.e. air, in the hull layup. Right now the transducer sits in a baggie filled with water, works fine, until I pull the boat this winter and pull out the old thru hull transducer, glass over and permantently mount the "in hull" ducer in that spot. Note, when I get a temp reading it is basically of the hull. The Garmin 250 does not have internal battary power. With the data/power cable it is hard wired to the boat's system and you can integrate it with the other NEMA reading instruments though I am not sure what this results in, perhaps displaying the GPS data on the finder screen, speed etc., or the depth on the laptop screen. I think I paid a little over $200. FF require you to choose what frequency of ducer ( 50 or 200 or dual) and what angle of tranmission such as 20 degrees or 40 degrees, but that is another topic.

To all... thanks for your help! I must have called all over the country in search of a 4" round DS45. Spoke to a few companies who carry the Standard Horizon DS45 and everyone of them has backorders! I bit the bullet and will use a DS150 4 1/4" square. This will cover the 4" round hole, but I will have to create a "backing" to properly secure it inside the boat.
