IT'S TIME TO REPLACE MY OLD NAVICO DEPTH SOUNDER. I WOULD LIKE TO DO THIS WITHOUT HAVING THE BOAT HAULED TO CHANGE THE THRU HAUL FOR A NEW TRANSPONDER. DOES ANYONE KNOW OF A DEPTH SOUNDER (RAYMARINE,SIMRAD, ETC.)THAT WOULD BE COMPATIBLE WITH THE OLD NAVICO THRU HAUL? I'VE CHECKED WITH SEVERAL BOAT SUPPLY HOUSES AND CAN'T SEEM TO GET A CONCRETE ANSWER. ANY INPUT WOULD BE APPRECIATED. KEITH JONES

Leave Thru-Hull In Place...

We are having to replace the transducer on our boat, which is already in the water...but it won't release from the fitting to complete the repair. SR Instruments is sending the new transducer and has suggested leaving the old transducer in place for the season and mounting the new one to the inside of the hull and reading depth through the hull. This requires building a mineral oil filled pvc casing to mount the new transducer in...something I am still trying to figure out how to conveniently and simply do.

tranducer installation

Check the archives on this topic. People have sucessfully installed tranducers using mineral oil tubes (maybe the hardest way to do it), beeswax, epoxy, silicone, and in one case a temporary installation with chewing gum that has lasted several years.

chewing gum

That was me, and the chewing gum is closing in on four years of sucessful use. There was also a sailor in Toronto who used peanut butter successfully!

May be able to use same transducer

I got a new hummingbird depth fish finder and spliced the wire to my existing through-hull transducer off the old flasher type depth sounder and it worked great. Depends on if they operate at the same frequency and the only way I know to tell is guess and check, but it may be worth a try.

I used toilet wax

It is sticky and cheap. Just use about 1/10 of the wax from a 99 cent toilet bowl ring. It sticks but is removable if you want to.
