My Datamarine depth sounder is reading a constant 16.6 feet. It doesn't vary from that reading even when traveling over different depths. The transducer doesn't appear to be fowled. I tried cleaning the cable connectors with no luck. Any suggestions?

clearly you have a gremlin swimming below the transducer 
I assume you tried powering the unit on and off. (the microsoft solution!)

Call DMI and discuss with a tech there. They are very helpful, but may want you to send them the unit for repair (which usually runs $150-200):
