Depth Sounder Installation

I read in the archives that some people mounted their depth sounder transducer using toilet bowl wax. What exactly is this? It that its "official" name? Is it available at the hardware store? Is the same as the wax seal for a toilet? I think I would like to give this method a try. Joseph Washburn "Disciple Ship" C-22

"toilet bowl wax ring"

is what it's called...under $5, available any home depot or plumbing store.

How does it work?

While I have installed a toilet bowl wax ring before, how do you go about using it to fix a transducer to the hull? Do you use the whole thing as is, reshape it, or cut off a piece and mold it to the size/shape needed? I can't seem to form a picture in my mind. Joseph Washburn "Disciple Ship" C-22

My guess would be to cut a piece of it off and push into into the hull and the transducer into it. The idea being, the wax is sticky yet soft enough and contains no bubbles so the transducer will shoot right through it. Sorry, I've just read other posts about this too, I haven't tried it. I've got my transducer "temporarily" embedded in silicone for 3yrs now.

Exactly where did you locate it?

Peter: Exactly where did you locate your transducer? I plan on placing the puck to mine in the compartment just forward of the head area. Is that where you placed yours? I will probably use wax, so that I can move it around, unless you tell me that you placed your's where I just suggested. I would rather use silicone than wax. Then it's done, and there won't be any mess. Please also tell me what year your C-22 is. Thanks, Aldo

location

Aldo, I have a C27 not a C22. I've placed the transducer in the V infront of the keel. Using the wax will allow you to try several locations without much hassle - and there's no mess, until you find the best spot. I had to move mine once because although it worked in the calm, a little chop and it wouldn't work well at all, so i moved it a little closer to the centreline and a little aft. I was quite glad that i had not used epoxy.

Thanks Peter

Thanks Peter. I guess if the transducer is too far forward and it gets air under it, it cannot do it's job. I'll take your advice and start out with the wax. Thanks again, Aldo
