I would like to install a depth sounder on my Hunter 26. Any suggestions as to brand, type and installation would be appreciated.

Fishfinder works for me

One thing I always found funny is sail boats have these really expensive basic depthfinders. When it came time to install a depth instrument in my 26, I went with a Garmin GPSMAP 125 combination GPS/Depth finder/Fish finder. For the cost of the average typical sailboat depth instrument, I get GPS position, waypoints, NMEA output for my tiller pilot, depth, bottom contour and type(soft/hard), Man Overboard Position, Anchor and depth alarm and if I choose to fish, I know where they are. If I upgraded to the next pricier model, I would have had a chart plotter too! My depth transducer shoots through the hull and I mounted the GPS antenna on the stern rail seats. The display is on a goldeye quick release mount. One base is mounted under the companionway steps, the other on the bulkhead in the cockpit. I have used this arrangement since 1999, and I have been very pleased.

transducers

On depth finders, you can install one several ways. The old thru hull which is the most accurate and I would place it to either side of the bilge pump. The second is glueing it to the hull but make sure you sand the surface and clean it up and when putting the transducer down, make sure there are no air bubbles. The third is a puck style submersed in mineral oil and the unit is glued to the hull. The fourth I have seen is the screwed in style on the back of the transom.

Horizon

I installed a horizon. Glue the holder to the inside of the hull with 4200,fill with mineral oil and screw the puck into it. Drill a hole to mount the meter and run the wires. Easy and it works good.
