depth sounder and log

I've finally decided to remove the good, old VDO mechanical sumlog and
to replace it with an electronic unit.

I consider two devices, which both combine a log with a depth sounder:
Nasa Marine Clipper Duet 200 Euro
Echopilot Bronze+ Trio 280 Euro
(2 transducers included in both cases)

Any experience with such units?
Any other possible choices, in a similar price range?

I would actually be satisfied with a box which takes depth/log signal
from transducers, and sends NMEA 0183 depth/speed data out.
I don't in fact need a new display - I can display depth/speed at the
GPS152 screen, which is already mounted outside, at the cabin roof.

Echopilot is more versatile, can display depth/speed history, time,
GPS data (when fed with NMEA 0183), but has a smaller display.

Nasa Marine is limited to displaying just depth and speed
does not have deep water alarm (only shallow alarm is there).

I can find any information on the current draw for both units, and what
their water protection level. And how loud are the alarms ?

For the depth, so far I use a cheapest fish-finder, with the transducer
glued to the inside of the hull, and it's just perfect (!),
except that it shows all this useless fish information on most of the
screen. It does not send any NMEA data out, and I can't find a good
place for it in the cockpit.

I often sail in shallow waters, where 2m is fine and normal. At 1.5m
(for example) I want an alarm, and I sometimes slowly continue down to
1.3m.
The fishfinder is surprisingly precise at such depths. Should I expect a
similar shallow water precision from either of the new units ?

For mounting the log transducer, I probably put in the keel, at the old
location of the VDO sumlog propeller. Should it work well there ?Marcin

Marcin, I have just removed the old VDO sumlog from my Vega because the cable housing was leaking into the bilge and I can't source a replacement, which is disappointing. What I am left with is a hole in the hull (as well as the VDO display and the white plastic impeller unit, should anyone be interested). I was unaware of both of the units you mention: Nasa Marine Clipper Duet and Echopilot Bronze+. They both look like viable options, but where have you seen them for the prices of 200 and 280 Euro? I put in a fish finder as depth gauge.
Its nice to see the bottom contour.
And you can see the fish if you want one.

But doesnt have knot meter.

You can get the glue-on-the-hull transducer so you dont have to drill.

for a depth sounder, you only need to embed the transducer in some silicone sealant; I keep mine in the forepeak just aft of the water tank. Alisdair

Glue a paper cup and glue rim to hull. Cut off top. Pour a little epoxy in andgravity forms a level surface for transducer to aim straight down. Does the compliant nature of calkcause loss of signal as it is compliant? This would be two way. One on tx an one on rx.

I was going to recommend something from Navman but I see they'e been
taken over by Lowrance who had been taken over by . . etc. which
means no more Navman.

FWIW I have a NASA Clipper depth sounder & have had no problems.

It even reads 0m when I run aground... :)

I think my next instruments will be NMEA 2000 for ease of connecting, and the B&G Triton line, so far, is my favorite. Still waiting for a good sale!Peterwww.mostlyaboutboats.ca
