Depth Meter Troubles

The depth gauge on our 1986 Hunter 31 is acting up: suddenly it won't register depth. Instead, the Datamarine shows "MSD" on left of screen and 18.8, with RCA plug on the back in or out. My computer search engine can't seem to locate much info on the meter. The other meter (speed) is its twin: it hasn't worked in years. Relevant websites for troubleshooting would help a lot. Technical advice would be great. Thanks, Joe

Same stuff

I have had the same problem. I "fixed" mine by removing the corosion/ oxidation from the connection on the back of the display. IE I removed the black wire from the back of the monitor and sanded it with very fine sand paper on both the wire and the monitor. this made my 1985 work.....P.S. I now have a display problem where only the bottom portion of a number is readable ..Its not good when you cant tell a 1 from a 9 on your depth gauge. If you cant fix your depth gauge I would be interested in buying it.

dielectric grease

a nice coating of dielectric grease on all fittings (including the coax in the bilge) will help.

mine was just repaired

mine is a Datamarine. google the name & it will take you to DMI website for repair. It cost me $170 shipped back. The diplay LCD needs to be repaced. same day I put it back in (the inner unit slips out after removing the 'O' ring), the knotmeter was jealous & stoped working. I took that one out but broke the switch since that is soldered to the PCB. I am going to switch to SIMRAD which is cheaper. also, my Datamarine wind instrument does not work.

Intemitten DMI problem

It took me two seasons but I finally got it fixed. The sumptom is very similar to yours. As it turned out, the back of the RCA socket on the display unit has two tiny wires going to a small two pins plug. The two pins plug on to a pair of small posts on the circuit board. The crimp joint on the plug was not tight and created an intermitten loose connection. I soldered them and have no problem for 2 years since.
