My signet Depth meter seems to only work in less than 25 ft of water. I guess that is better than in only more than 25 feet, but I wonder if there are any suggestions out there about possible causes. Thanks

Depth readings

Bill-- Two thoughts come to mind: does your depth gauge have an adjustable gain setting? If so, adjusting it in small increments may improve the sensitivity of the unit. Second, some units have seperate ranges. i.e. on range for shallow depths (0-20 feet, for example), and another for deeper water. Check to see if your unit is set on a shallow range. Finally, some units just don't have the strength to reach a deep bottom (though 25 feet is not really deep!). If that's the case, at least your unit reads the depth when it really counts. Good luck, Randy

New Problem?

Bill - you don't mention if this is a recent problem with a sounder that used to work OK, or is this a new installation. If it's a new installation, it's possible that the location or installation of the transducer might be giving you the funny readings. I did not install my transducer through the hull. Rather, I mounted my transducer in a bed of epoxy inside the hull forward of the holding tank under the v-berth('85 Catalina 27) - just off the centerline - and it is able to read down to the instrument's 200ft max. I did follow the instructions and carefully tested that location before I mixed up the epoxy. You might also check out transducer cable connections and power. Good Luck!
