I have a problem with my depth gage. When I go over 700 feet in depth the meter registers "--". When I go back into water less that 700 feet the meter starts reading correctly. My concerns are: 1. Shouldn't the meter record greater depth. 2. Why does the meter go to "--" ? 3. Will the meter always start registering again once it stops.? Anyone else have this problem ? If so how did you fix it ?

my guess is

your depth meter will not read deeper then that because it was designed not to. the transducer has only so much signal power ! Check your instrument manual to see what its capacity is. If this reallly bothers you be prepared to send big bucks on a depth gauge that read deep water! Hope this helps!

Why bother with deeper than 700 feet ?

I have the ST60 and it does not read any deeper than 600 feet. I am not too concerned by that as I am much more interested in knowing when the bottom is coming up! When in unknown waters, I feel more secure with the alarm set at 7 feet (my 34 draws 4'3"). If you use the depth sounder for an idea of where you are, a hand-held GPS is all you need (or a sextant!) and much cheaper.

No biggie

Most depth sounders have a limit to how deep they read. Yours appears to be 700 feet. Like Claude says, after that, who cares how deep it is? :) LaDonna
