On my new 1983 30 Catalina the SR Mariner depth gage (the orginal) reads anywhere from 100' to 400' in 4' to 30' feet of water. I found the 4' bottom (thankfuly only mud) all by my self. Any suggestions on a replacement? I think that I would like to use the same thruhull and housing for the instrument. Thank. This site has helped me often. Bryan

me too!

I have the same problem although not quite so bad. When I pull up to a shallow mooring (15ft or so) I get a reading of 15 ft. When I have tied up and stopped the reading soon changes to 00 which is disconcerting. BTW this is not due to a the tide :)

depth gage alternatives

When I bought my C27 this spring, it came with a Hummingbird fishfinder which I thought I'd never use. Turns out, it's quite useful. My particular model gives me depth, speed, battery power, water temperature, trip log data, as well as the the usual fish related information. It also tells me if the bottom is hard or soft and displays vegatation. It looks like it used the original thru hull for the knot meter.

I just replaced my depth sounder last weekend.

I have an 88 C30 and just replaced mine with a Raytheon ST60. I had a Signet Marine with a thru hull transducer before. The ST60 depth sounder worked with the same transducer, I just had to find which two wires to use. I consulted a marine electronics place and was told that most transducer connections are with black and white or black and blue wires. I like the new one better than the old. It has a larger font and seems more rugged. I was real easy to replace, but not cheap!

Need a depth meter? Take a look at fish finders!

If you haven't looked into a LCD graphic fishfinder, check one out. Whether you're interested in finding fish or not, these are the coolest depth sounders around, especially for the money. In addition to just digital depth, they show the consistancy of the bottom, graphic history of your recent track, speed through the water, surface tempurature, and more. The volt meter feature would be really helpful too. -- Leon Sisson

Transducer?

I looked at a couple of fishfinders and they had a transom mount transducer. Is this what you have? I didn't think it would be easy to fit on a Cat 30.

Variety of transducers

Tom, you can get a variety of different transducers. The cheaper models don't even come with them so you pick your own. I definitely wouldn't go with the transom mount version. LaDonna

Make Sure You Need One First!

Our sounder went whacko - reading all over the place - and it turned out we just needed to clean the corrosion off the connectors at the back of the display - works fine again!
