Depth Finders

I am considering the purchase of a depth finder (fish finder) of my Mac 26X. I was looking at a Lowrance X87 or an Eagle Fishmark 320. They look to be the same units just under different brands. Does anyone know if the Lowrance and Eagle are the same. The Eagle is considerable less expensive. I'd be interested in any comments anyone has on these or fish finders in general. Also any watch outs on installation. By the way, I sail on Pickwick lake where I'm guessing the deepest water is way less than 100 feet, and I'm really not interested in finding fish, just would like to know the water depth. Tanks for any information. Jeff

Depth finder

I have a Humminbird Piranha I. 75 bucks at Walmart. Works fine but I have a few spots in the engine RPM that mess it up. Works perfectly with the engine off. Tim Bastian Zephyr's Aura Hixson, TN

Eagle

When I purchased an Eagle (model??) this past winter, the kind folks at West marine told me they were made by Lowrance.

depth finder

I installed a Tournament 1100 model 013087 ($80) and it works great all the time at all speeds. I installed the transducer about 1.5 inches to starboard of water ballast tank under the forward & starboard acces panel which is under the aft berth. This is about 15-20 inches behind head compartment. Before epoxying permanently, you can use smooth peatnut butter as a temporary bond to test the transducer placement. Run the cable up to the steering pedestal thru the steering cable access hole keping the depth cable seperated from the motor electrical cable as much as possible.

Piranha 4 with Transom Transducer

I've got the Piranha 4 - depth and water temp with a transom mount transducer. I got it beacuse it's very compact and (at the time of purchase) very inexpensive ($99). It works fine most of the time as long as the transducer is horizontally aligned (fore and aft) properly. Sometimes it get's mis-aligned (due to debris in the water, etc.) so I have to reach down and rotate it so that it shoots accurately downward. Once done, I can get consistent readings under power (17-19mph) or sail (4-7mph). Unfortunately, it does not have a speed sensor so I use my GPS for that.
