Hunter 37.5 Plattsburgh
I have a Hunter 37.5 with an Autohelm ST-50 pod mounted depth sounder. The isnsrument has malfunctioned and now only displays 00 as a depth. I have cleaned the through hull tansducer face with no improved results. Has anyone had a similar problem and if so how was it resolved. Is it possible to test the transducer and display unit to see which is at fault?

Hi Roy, we have the suite of Autohelm...

instruments on our boat and all still work (1991). One way to test the head is to scroll through the various settings referenced in the user manual. If those check out okay the problem could be in the transducer or somewhere in between. Begin by making sure that all connections are free of corrosion. Many of the transducers were and are still made by the same company (I have the name and phone number on the boat, a ways away). Hunter or Raymarine should have that contact information. They may have some tips on trouble shooting the transducer. I know that at times our instruments will act up, which will clear by resetting the breaker. Also, make sure you're getting at least 12 volts DC at the head. Reduced voltage, for whatever reason, can cause strange things to happen. The boat is in the water, right? It is unable to read depth while on the hard. Terry

Remove the display

We had a similar problem but ours went blank. I took it off and took apart the display to find it was soaked with water ( it flowed out). After leaving it in the sun on my dash to dry it out I re-assembled and it worked fine. One of the screws in the corner had broke and it does not seal perfectly but as long as the cover is on I think it will be OK.
