The depth finder on my boat is not working too well and is very difficult to read, so I started to check out the price of depth finders. here in Canada I am unable to come up with one under $400.00. When I checked on I boats mall I saw a Hummingbird HDR 600 for well under $100.00 and my question is: jdoes anyone out there have this model of depth finder on thier sailboat? is it good? where did you place the "puck" How is it's durability? I would be very interested to find out. thanks, dirk

I bought a Hummingbird 600 last May to use on my 1972 Pearson 26. I was worried the hull was to thick to mount inside the hull but I did anyway and it works fine. Just glued it in place about an inch off the center line forward of the keel. Cruising the Chesapeake Bay I am in water 4' to 150' and it registers right with the chart. I know a couple of guys that have them. Their cheep and may not last forever but then just replace it. David

fish finder vs depth finder
Hello, I think you will be better off with an inexpensive fish finder instead of a depth finder. There are fish finders available for between $100 and $200 that will show you the bottom, water temp, depth, battery voltage and some other information too. good luck, Barry

No glue needed
Just to try it out, I mounted the puck of my humminbird in a big glob of axle grease on the centerline forward of the keel. It works so well that I've never even bothered to epoxy it in... PS Just remember, no bubbles. And it doesn't work well with cored hulls.

Echopilot FLS Bronze
Not sure about the HDR 600 but I got a Humminbird (note no 'g') Matrix 27 and installed it with the in-hull transducer. I couldn't find a good spot forward that would get me a good reading but found one just behind the keel. It works great. The old deph finder stopped at about 90' feet in Lake Ontario but the Matrix lets me see right through the thermal cline down to 200+ which was the maximum depth I got to. I've been looking at those Echopilot FLS Bronze sonar units so you can see ahead as well as down. Does anyone have any experience with them?
