depth finder

I posted a query recently about locating the control head for a depth finder on an H 23. The response I received was for the transducer location. There is lots of discussion on this subject, but only one post on locating the control head, the part of the depth finder that gives the readings. The only thing I've seen here is a set up mounted on self-closing hinges in the entry way to the cabin. I am wondering if there are any other solutions to what seems to be a simple problem. Thanks in advance for any ideas you have.

Being a sailor wo is adverse to putting holes in

my boat, I mounted the control head on a piece of 8x6 walnut (teak would have been better but the walnut was avaiable)1 inch wood and put rubber stickies on the bottom, so it wouldn't slipp around. I keep it in the cabin when in port, and relocate it to the top of the hatch way or in front of the companion way when sailing. That way I can see it from any place inthe cockpit and can store it inside when I'm in the slip. Hayden

Depth sounder location

I have an H25 and I mounted my depth sounder, inclinometer, and compass on the front of the main hatch. This 2 - 3" wide strip holds the brackets and it only takes a minute to attach or de-tatch (sp?) the units and it also gives good visibility from the cockpit. Craig S/V Wind Toy 1977 H25

Location

I mounted my depth/fish finder beside the compaionway (starboard side). It unplugs and comes off in seconds and can be stored inside. I will try to post a photo with this.

depth sounder location

The space in the cockpit below the traveler is an area from the floor of the cockpit to where the hatch opens. This is fairly flat and is accessable from the inside of the cabin. If you are sitting in the cabin, the depth guage and knot meter are mounted on either side of the fuse box - with holes through into the cockpit. Last week I took some pictures specifically for this response, but the film was lost by walmart. I will try again because this description is probably not good enough to explain, but when you see the photo's, it will be obvious. The work was done by the previous owner of the boat so I have no idea how difficult it is to do it this way. However there are no leaks and the guages are accessable if needed.

I kept the hole small

by making it just big enough to get the connector through sideways, cutting with a dremel tool. I didn't cut through the liner at all - just snaked the cable through. Initially I used RTV to mount the swivel base on the diamond-tread near the stern, but decided that it would be much more practical in a permanent location on the bulkhead. With the water levels dropping here this is a really great piece of gear.

next to fuse box

I mounted the depth sounder in the location Bill is trying to describe - to the port side of the switch/fuse box below the companionway. Would I do it that way again? I don't know. Its out of the way, and generally easy to read, although sometimes you have to ask people to move their legs. I would prefer if there were a way to tilt it up slightly. The problem is the only other options seem to be on the bulkhead next to the companionway, which would interefer with a prime lounging location, or on a moveable board, which I suspect has its own pluses and minuses. It was easy to install. I used a saw t[ye hole cutting drill-bit. I think I made a pilot hole from the inside to insure sufficient distance from the fuse box, then did most of the cutting/drilling from the outside. The head is sealed to the bulkead with boatlife caulking. Its never leaked and never been kicked. FYI, I placed the transducer in the v-berth storage compartment, as far back as possible. Sanded a flat area and epoxied to the inside of the hull. Dispite being told you get better accuracy if you install it as a thru-hull, extra holes below the water line are amoung the things I am willing to admit being a bit chicken about. Hey Bill

Bill I noticed it looks like you moved your companion hatch lock to the right. Does that allow you to close the slider all the way "keeping water out" in that position while it's locked? btw: nice mods
