I am looking for advice on an inexpensive depth finder for my Catalina 22. The PiranhaMAX has been recommended to me. It is a transom transducer mount. Any thoughts regarding a transom mount transducer for a my boat? Thanks
Why not mount it inside the boat? I mounted the transducer using the wax off a toilet bowl wax ring three years ago and it's still working just fine. I chose only a depth gauge.
I have a PiranhaMAX 20 on mine and it's worked out very nicely.
The transducer puck is located in the compartment fwd of the keel (near my water tank for my sink) and the lines were led aft underneath the cabin floor along the centerline.
The only time that the fish finder is inaccurate is when there are lots of underwater weeds.
I had a 22 Catalina and I bought a hummingbird brand depth finder. it worked great. it was only abuot 100.00. google hummingbird depth finders and you should be able to order one right off the net.
It has worked well for 3 yrs. Small, depth with alarm. Thru-hull transducer. I got a refurb for $55-60. Mounted on a hinged piece of wood in companionway. A couple of months ago, broke the display during a wild run. They replaced the unit with an upgradeded new one for $30.00 plus shipping. Turned it around in less than a week. Good unit, good service...
