Put it in the obvious place.

You should put it in the bow area. The farther forward the more warning you are going to have. May post have suggested that you use one that attaches on the stern. My take on this is that it really does not do a lot of good to know (digitally) that you have gone aground. Every second counts in shallow water. Depending on the type of transducer you get you may be able to epoxy it to the inside of the hull. This prevents you from having to drill one of those dreadful holes in the hull. I have mine attached with this method and it has worked well for 15 years.

Steve -- What Brand?

Steve, I read your response. Do you have any recommendations on brand/model to get?

Several brands.

Adrian: There are several mfg that have transducers that will work this way. Check with your local marine electronics dealer and get their recommendation for something in your price range. I think that the Standard Horizion and West Marine brands can be installed with this method, but you need to find out what the mfg recommend. My boat has Navico (now Simard) instruments. I am going to upgrade my stuff to Nexus this year.

In hull transducer.

D. I just finished installing two instruments thru the hull of my H26. The archives for this model suggested mounting them on each side of the bildge pump. This also looked like a very smooth waterflow area and allowed the senders to be mounted straight down. Steve's idea about forward mounting is very good although I could not find a good place on mine. In the small boat archive in the last 45 days was an article about a fairly new inside hull instrument that requires no hole. I wish I'd have seen that first. Good luck Ray

Try It First

Ours is a Garmin GPS/Sounder so we get everything in one package and on a single display. We mounted the sender 'puck' inside the hull at Garmin's suggestion. You can try various locations on the hull by using KY Jelly to fill the voids, just like the clinic makes ultrasounds of our bodies. When you find a 'sweet spot' just clean up with soap and water, let dry, then mount permanently with RTV or Epoxy. I used a silicone adhesive so it can be removed with a razor blade but the important thing is NO BUBBLES. The deepest water I've sailed in is 75' and it works fine and even spots fish and tells you the character of the bottom. Ken S/V Wouff Hong

Something else to consider.......

I've seen transducers mounted in pairs on either side of the hull(forward the keel) with a mecury type switch activating the leeward side one. This would give a more accurate reading at heel.
