Demise

It finally happened.
After many hours of tender care the patient was unable to recover.
She tried. We worked together to try and restore her to the glory
days but at 44 degrees 33 minutes north; 83 degrees 16 minutes west
MD6A gasped her last breath. She charged faithfully to the very end;
but now she's gone, a loud clank and solemn silence marked her passage.

Question: Those of you who have repowered--what are your
experiences? Is the Beta the clear choice?

Thanks for the input. Victor

Victor,
My Vega has been repowered by the previous owner with a Volvo Penta MD2010B in 1998. It's a 2-cyl. 10hp engine which is quite reliable and quiet and has an wonderfully low fuel consumption. Max. speed on engine is approx. 6 kts. If I had to repower now I might have chosen just 2 or 3 hp extra (so a 12 or 13 hp engine) to have that little bit extra when there's strong currents against you and no wind. I sail in the south of Holland and on the North Sea and there's very much difference between high and low tides there, so strong currents. If you are not using your Vega in these conditions, 10hp should be sufficient.
I cannot compare with the Beta option unfortunately.
Good luck with the replacement job.

Hello Victor;

I repowered with a Yanmar 1GM diesel. I installed it
myself, and it was quite easy. The engine pushed my Vega
about 6.5 mph, fuel consumption is minimal. Should you get
a Yanmar, let me know- I have a few good suggestions on
minor changes on the exhaust system.
