I have a 2007 Hunter 33. Yesterday, I was sailing close-hauled with 10 knots of wind and my mast came down. When we finally got the boat back to the docks and got the mast out of the water it appeared that one of the inner shrouds failed. Has any one heard of this happening?

for sure, not as often as I would expect...but when a critical cable lets go, fully loaded mast and the other shrouds are not strong enough to take up the load...things happen, fast. Hope no one was injured.

I would look closely at the mast, before reusing to make sure that the cable let go first, and that the mast has not suffered any damage.

The new(er) boats are built/rigged so cheaply and so close on design, that there is not much room for error or failure of a part, before you see things like this. ie Chain plates pulling out/separating/dissolving, yet hidden under layers of glass or behind furniture/shelves that can not be moved to inspect them

Qualified rigger for a complete check, would be my next move.

YMMV

Notify your insurance company as that is a mishap usually covered under accidental ocurrences. We got dismasted years back in the Chesapeake Bay and BoatUS insurance gave us a brand new spar and covered all the rigging costs. The rigger contracted for the job threw in the installation of lazy jacks to compensate us for the coverage deductible. Now that was BoatUS other lesser insurers may trie to squirm out of paying but that is definitely an accidental ocurrence. In our case we suspect a clevis pin failed on one of the port shrouds.

And you wonder why FL boat insurance rates are so high??!!

no one "throws in the install..." of anything for free, to compensate YOU for YOUR deductible....someone pays...the rest of us responsible customers and in VA this would be insurance fraud...and someone here may be inclined to make a call to Boat/US and explain how they covered the free lazy jacks..

sheesh!?

Accident...NOT,
clevis pin failing is MAINTENANCE...likely the cotter pin rotted away and the clevis FELL out.

KD I'm just stating the facts. We thought they were going to repair our spar, but the company elected to replace it. I saw the the invoices paid by the insurer and none of the components or labor utilized to install the lazy jacks were paid by them. These were fabricated and installed by the rigger at his cost mostly using materials he already had. He did not have to offer but he did. Nobody was hurt in the incident and no other damage claims nor salvage or towing expenses were associated with it. We had an have been a faithful customer of BoatUS and felt that we were treated accordingly. That was the only claim we have ever made in 20+ years and you sir have some nerve to suggest we would be involved in any kind of fraud. I brought it up because not all people know that a dismasting can be considered an accidental ocurrence and they may forego to notify their insurance at great cost to them. We pay a hefty insurance premium to cover these mishaps and is good to have a good company provide the coverage. It is not about the money as we have probably paid for that job more than a few times over in yearly premiums but it is about the peace of mind if something serious should occur.

Speaking of insurance fraud; I know of one couple in our marina whom got involved in a scrap and repainted their 30 year old hull. The damage was barely visible. It happens sad to say...

Bergstrom rig?

Does this boat have a Bergstrom rig? Seems odd to me that an inner (lower) shroud failure should cause the rig to come down otherwise.

Yes it would be a B&R Rig.

No answers back from OP. Wonder what he found.
