So, Chevron quit making this oil. It tried the Delo 400 and i get some smoke and a bit more usage. Anybody know of a direct substitute for this 50 yr old design engine? Engine manual says 20/30 wt above 50 deg F..They are still making the 40 wt.

I think it has the same API rating as the Delo 400 LE which is what i currently have and "they" do not show it as backward compatible to the API "CD" rating for this engine. However, it's looking like Rotella T1 might work..And it's available..Looks like I'm trying to stay away from the CJ-4 rating. Decades ago, i had a sistership with same engine. I had to pull it apart and I tried breaking it in with Delo 400. Never did get the rings to seat. Was told i shoulda used Delo 100. Websites are saying that running the newer oils in older engines is not good. They tend to glaze the liners and then the obvious problems start...since this engine only has ~300 hrs on it, I'm trying to stay with the older oil ratings and be diligent with changes..My last oil change was with Delo 400 LE and I shouldn't have done that...
Never woulda thought of that. This engine is well seated. 400 psi on all cylinders and runs well. I did have a plymouth 318 i rebuilt in high school and let sit before I installed and tried to start. Had to pour some ATF down the carb to get compression...

I have gone totally synthetic oils. I buy 5W at Latitude 32.
The only difference between diesel engine oil and regular oil is the Sulphur content, since diesels run a bit hotter. Save the planet and all that.
