I've a 2004 H240 on the way - will be here next week. Is there anything I need to know before dealer starts prep or that I should do before launching for the first time? Can't wait - just want to get it right the first time! Thanks for any suggestions. Thinking of a name... Drew

Yes

Don't leave anything to chance. Meet with the service department and insure that you are all on the same page as far as how any options (instruments, engine cotrols, bimini, and the lettering of your boat name) are going to be installed.

Are you working with Rick at Backyard Boats? What he knows, I taught him. Rick can be relied on as I think the world of him. If he cannot answer you, have him give me a call and a will walk you thru. Are you planning to bottom paint? You will learn who I am but do not post it on the forum which i appreiate.

Two heads are better

Prior to delivery I would have done only one thing different: I would have ordered an outboard with remote controls to save the time and expense of converting it later. The last thing you need when docking a boat with this much freeboard in heavy wind is to be turning backwards and adjusting throttle and shifter. During commissioning, bring along a good listener because there will be details you simply won't catch but that will make a big difference the first time you go it alone. They will dole out lots of little tips to make your life easier but if you don't remember them all you'll learn the hard way anyway. Things like: Keep the rudder downhaul tight so rudder doesn't float up and keep the rudder uphaul tight so it doesn't foul the prop. You don't want to experience the problems caused by this little control line. Another big one is keeping the sidestay turnbuckles upright when raising the mast. You will bend T-bolts if you don't pay attention to this. Then you buy new ones. Another problem area is in retrieving the boat; you must keep the bow from getting the least bit sideways and catching the front roller supports or expect to get handy at fiberglass repair. And let the centerboard down slowwwly. Get spares of the tiller extension clips (see recent posts). I keep a handful around because I have not yet learned not to step over the tiller. Honestly the boat is easy to rig and sail but I had problems with these points due to lack of attention span during the commissioning session.

You can get some good pointers from Sean Course as he is in the Norfolk area with his 240. Tell Rick I said hello from Crazy
