My wife and I are bringing our new Catalina 42' down to San Francisco from BC and will have a delivery captain along with us to help out and give us some advanced lessons. He has done this passage numerous times. Assuming all goes well, is there a guideline to follow for tipping him at the end of the voyage?

yes

yes - give him a hundred dollars assuming no damage, etc. and tell him to .... ... and stop thinking of the wife. had similar problem myself.

Tip everyone!

I'd tip anyone in a service industry who I though did a good job. This would include a delivery skipper in my book. I'd go 10 to 15 percent of the skipper's fee. Since I'm essentially a broke law student, I tend to tip in other ways. My girlfriend runs a catering establishment that focuses on high end small dinner parties, etc. The guy who trucked my boat this year and the broker who sold it to me each got a dinner for two, wine if they wanted it. Not as valuable as the cash, but well received. Oh, I probably wouldn't sweat the whole skipper/wife thing. Justin - O'day Owner's Web

Or spending money

Rob's done a couple of deliveries where the owners gave him some spending money at each larger port 'o call. He enjoyed this tremendously. LaDonna

Here comes Scooge

I don't see why anyone would tip a delivery Captain?? I mean, he sat on your boat all day while you were at work earning his pay! And even if you were on the boat with him he was still sailing the hours away while the meter was running. If anything, I try to get a 5 or 10 percent discount for cash. Then he doesn't have to pay taxes and Uncle Sam gives him his tip. Just a thought.. Ron
