I have a '77 O'Day center cockpit. The previous owner installed two Beckwith vents through the deck fore of the coach and back of the anchor locker. The wood has finally delaminated. The area affected is about 3' x 4' and does not extend to the edge of the deck at the deck/hull joint. Anyone else run into this? Is this a job for the do-it-yourselfer, or is it best left to the pros?

Delamintation

This is a job you can do if you want to try it. Try www.westsystem.com for information on the job. You will need to take your time but its doable. Cut out the outside skin. Cut out the bad wood. Lay in adhesive mixture. Fair it. Replace the skin. Fair it. Paint it. Sounds simple, is simple. It will be time consuming, though. Check that website, then check back with us. Good luck. Thanks Justin

Justin, Thanks for the tip. Dug out my West Systems book, and have the info. However my wife thinks I should hire someone to do it. Just because she can't get the fiberglass off the kitchen cabinets from my last project. . .

Foredeck delam fixes

This year I replaced the core in my foredeck, and cabintop. It was time consuming. I replaced the core on the cabin top with 1/4 inch white cedar, and the core on the fore deck with 1/4 luane underlayment plywood. It seems to work pretty well. Oh yeah, I covered the seams of the top deck lamination with 2 inch glass tape. it wasn't too bad.
