We recently looked at a 1994 Capri 22 with the racing package that has lots of differed maintenance. It has about 15 items that need attention. All the issues I would consider as fixable, a couple, like a wet port side deck, it thunks with hammer, and a wet cabin top would probably be the most challenging. I do my own surveys and carry a moisture meter and a small plastic tipped hammer.
I am looking for advice for two of the problems, cracked and some delamination of fiberglass on the keel, 8”-10” down from the hull and the delamination around the inside of the windows. Where is the keel/hull joint, is that about where the fiberglass is cracked? And why is the keel fiberglassed? We had a J28 and a Catalina 36 TR with a fin keel and neither of those had fiberglassed keels. I have attached pictures of both issues. You may need to zoom in to see the dead light issues better. What is the stuff on the inside of the cabin top and is it easy to repair?
Some of the other problems are it needs new running rigging, the owner doesn’t cover the boat in the winter and all the running rigging is very icky, moldy and UV damaged. I wouldn’t trust dropping the mast with the jib halyard. On our boats we removed most of the running rigging in the winter. The motor mount plywood is delaminated, the hatch seal is leaking. It had poured the day before and there was some water in the VBerth. The port window has a vertical crack. The companionway “ends” are slightly cracked, both chainplates have moisture about 3” out from them, pretty typical for a 30 year old boat. I would eventually rebed all the hardware and I have been reading about Bed It. Inside the boat was clean even in the lockers. The hull, sides and transom seemed solid. The wing keel had some minor damage on the port side aft where he wacked the bunk support on a launch, the trailer doesn’t have the hitch extension.
Thanks for any information you can provide. We had have 6 other sailboats from new to old so we are pretty familiar with the kinds of issues sailboats have and we have done about 20 years of beer can racing.
