ahhhhh, you have a leak. it does not take a lot of diesel on a hot engine to really smell up the place.
I'd recommend you first just look at all the fuel system parts and see if any are "wet". Start at the injectors (located where spark plugs would be on a gas engine) and follow the tubing back to the injector pump, then a filter and supply pump then the primary filer (if installed) and then the tank. Somewhere there has to be a leak/weep. Your nose is a great tool to identify the location.
On a side note, if you drip diesel on an engine it sill smell for quite some time before it goes away. You will notice it getting "better" though as time goes by.

Re: Bill's Suggestion

Starting around the fuel lines and pumps, wipe each surface using a clean white rag. You may not see it but a tiny seep from a banjo fitting on the secondary fuel filter top was what the problem was on my boat. Could not see it but the rag revealed it.

Lauri, Also check the tightness of the screws on the fittings on the top of the fuel tank. As in my case, the screws can LOOK tight but , in reality, may have some micro-play in them which allows diesel to be expressed around "non-seal" if there is any pressure in tank. Best of luck. Laurie, do you run the engine blower when the diesel is running ? It does sound like you have a small leak, we do get an "engine smell" and lots of heat if we don't run the blower while motoring.
Good luck on finding the leak, Bob
