Deisel fuel spill...

I recently replaced the engine-mounted fuel filter and apparently did not adequately tighten the collar. After a long motor sailing outing, I returned to find not only my engine tray full of deisel fuel but also the area underneath the tray. The fuel got there by virtue of the fact that the filter canister sits directly above the hoses that pass through the cut-out in the starboard side of the engine compartment. The underneath area got full enough that when I pulled the stopper in the tray at the base of the companionway steps, the fuel literally ran into that tray, too. I pumped out all that I could but believe there to be more inside the underneath space. My problem is, I have no idea what that space looks like and can see no way to access it. How does one clean out that area?
