ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE LIFE OF THE AVERAGE DEISEL ENGINE IS . I HAVE A WESTERBEKE 42B.A FRIEND OF MINE WHO OPERATES HEAVY EQUIPMENT SAYS THAT 25000 HOURS IS NOT UNCOMMON FOR DEISEL ENGINES TO RUN BEFORE NEEDING REBUILDING.

Maintenance records more important than hours

Hi Mark - I believe that if a diesel engine is properly maintained it should last many hours - I've seen engines in sailboats with over 8,000 hours that run well and don't appear to need any major rebuild. I've also see engines with less than 1000 hours that are in poor condition due to neglect. Sailboat engines take more abuse than most, since often they are run only to get a boat out of the marina and back in, since we're supposed to be sailing, right? Proper warmup, regular fluid changes, impellor and filter checks are often more important than overall hours. Trevor

Diesel lore

I agree. Taken proper care as discussed, a diesel will run and run. I have a 77 catalina 30 and the diesel runs well.
