Has anyone installed a deck washdown pump on their boat? Where did you locate it? How do you like it? Any problems, troubles, suggestions? S/V "Never Say Never'

A friend did!

Bob: A friend of mine put a pump in the head compartment (under the sink). He ran the hose from the raw water intake off of the head intake. Ran the hose under the v-berth and up into the anchor locker for the connection.

Installed this spring

I located my Blaster pump in the bilge area of my h40.5 and ran the 1/2" hose through the grid channel under the vee berth and up into the anchor locker. It was an easy run. The pump location was chosen for 2 reasons. First I wanted to have a raw water strainer ahead of the pump and I could tap off the existing strainer for my A/C in that bilge area. Second, I tee'd off the output of my blaster pump and ran a seawater line to a faucet at my galley for general rinsing to conserve fresh water. And while I was at it, I also took another tee off the pump output and ran it through a small valve to the backflush port on the WEMA holding tank transducer. This system works great for all 3 uses. I can't wait until my buddies get out their water cannons this summer and I bring out my washdown hose! C'mon, make my day..... Rich

washdown pump

I installed a shurflo 3.5 gpm pump teed off the forward head raw-water intake. I mounted the pump next to the macerator, using a toggle switch to tie it into the macerator's electrical line, thus eliminating the need to run extra wires. The hardest part of the installation was glassing a plywood mounting plate to the hull. My first attempt failed because the plate slid before the epoxy dried. Then a friend advised me to bond the plate to the hull using Liquid Nails, allowing to to dry overnight before glassing it. Sweet. After that, the installation took no more than an hour. I ran the outflow to the chain locker so that it wouldn't become a toe-stubber. If I had it to do over again, I would use a Groco 7.0 washdown pump because 3.5 gpm doesn't give the water cannon enough range. Regardless, it's great no longer to have to worry about getting mud on the spinnaker after spending a night on the hook.
