I installed a Jabsco deck wash last year. A "springy" hose and a nozzle came with it. Used 4-5 times last year. Hoisted anchor this morning and the hose now has multiple pin hole leaks along it's length..tired of buying crap.. Anyone else have bad experiences with these hoses? Looking for alternates.

I purchased a springy air hose to use for the wash down hose. It is stored in the cockpit area and fed by a pressure pump. I am into second year with it and so far its seems to be OK. I have probably used it about a dozen times. The hose I use on the dock is also a springy one but it is only about a year old. I believe I bought both of them at ACE Hardware. Air hose on boat is yellow the dock hose is red.

I have had 2 or more of them and sooner later they leak and even tried repairing them
and only leak again and now have a short piece maybe 3' heavy hose from AC hardware in anchor locker for washing the anchor off.
I even tried those newer expanding hoses and guess what they leak sooner or later also
and so far have the newer expanding hose that I use at dock.
I have a plastic or maybe rubber RV hose from walmart that rolls up flat on a small
plastic that was used for wire or have seen a hose that rolls into plastic case.
No more springy hose for me.

I had one of those expanding hoses. What it seems to be is surgical tubing inside hollow nylon webbing, with cheap looking plastic end fittings. Once filled by water pressure, it becomes relatively inflexible. It does not return to a compact, coiled shape, that's just how they package them. It's empty volume is less than that of a vinyl garden hose, but I don't know it's durable enough for boat or dock use.

I bought a 3 channel flat vinyl hose that winds up on a roll once. It, too, has cheap plastic fittings. But surprisingly, it has lasted a long time. I still use it from time to time, like when I haven't dug the hose reel out of the basement in the Spring. A bit limited in water volume compared to the regular round garden hose.

In the RV world, there are flat expandable hoses with fabric covering, and which can roll up on a reel. There are mixed reviews of representative samples on Amazon. One guy has used on his boat and loves it, others pan them due to leaks. Definitely would prefer one of them for storage space saving.

I had one of the expanding hoses too. The end blew off and soaked me the second time I used it. Junk. Too bad too, they'd be a great idea if they worked.

My anchor wash down system has not leaked since I installed it 15 years ago and it cost me $3. Always works, draws no electricity and serves other purposes such as catching crabs and fish (another story). It is a two gallon plastic bucket with a wire handle. I added a lanyard and carabiner so that it stays with the boat. Just say'n.

A bucket does not do very good when the anchor comes up packed with mud.

Some must have the wrong kind of bucket. Mine is dark green and does great getting the mud off of the anchor and chain. Serves out purpose nicely.

John spent the past few weeks in the hospital dealing with a form of colitis. Diarrhea was and has been the biggest side affect. He thinks it might have been aggravated by a new medication that he was taking dealing with plaque siricius. He is now in a rehab facility connected to the Mount Vernon hospital. He has improved greatly. Things were pretty bad for him earlier.

Warning to those who might try Terry's washdown system. I've broken enough plastic buckets, I've moved on to a rubber feed bucket from Tractor Supply. :D But then again, it serves double duty as my anchor locker.

Hi Brian, those rubber feed buckets are the best and a good choice. Our bucket is fifteen years old and showing no signs of breaking or cracking. Must be a, "Made In The USA", product. When and if this one ever breaks I'll probably go your route.

Thanks for the tip.

I've had a few of those coily washdown hoses. All get pin hole leaks or fine cracks after 2 years. Frustrating for sure. I've bought these from West. Just last fall, at haul out, I was washing the deck off, and it starting shooting fine mist in a few directions. Nice brass end fittings (which I cut off an keep), but just plastic hose.

I made the circuit of Wally, Lowes, West, and Ace. Ended up buying a fifty foot springy coil hose from Ace. Much more substantial and beefy brass fittings. Only $27.00...its sorta long, so I zip tied numerous coils together at three places. If I need more length for some reason, just clip ties...We'll see how it works this summer...

I use regular garden hose. I made it long enough to go from the anchor locker to the back of the boat, just in case. I have used it to wash fish guts down the scupper. Good garden hose will last a long time.
The bucket users must not be anchoring in mud. It takes a lot of pressure to wash off sticky mud from all the chain that ends up laying on the bottom.
I've been contemplating a nozzle attached just under the anchor roller to spray the chain as it comes up.

Those shrinking hoses are crap. I had one that lasted about 2 months.

Only real trouble with the feed buckets is they'll make black marks on the deck which can be very difficult to removed from nonskid.

I've been using the same plastic bucket for years, It lives upside down in the corner of the cockpit. It's a 2 1/2 gallon food grade from a bakery and held some sort of dough or something. I took the wire off and added a rope handle. Picture shows where it lives 24/7. Been there since at least 2008.

Hi Mark, thanks for keeping an eye on John's boat. Holly, his daughter and her two kids check on his boat and bring him things he needs from it.
