I have a 78 Hunter 30. Corrected the typical mast sag problem by cutting from the top deck down to the cabin liner and filled the whole area in with heavy glass mat. The pressure post was reseated and shimmed so its in there tight. Whats the purpose of the plywood I took out that was inbedded in the deck under the mast step? Is this fix going to hold up and not crack? The glass plate under the mast step is about 2" thick. The step sets on a raised T shapped area. The whole raised area was drilled out and filled in.

Steve, The builder puts in plywood where
he needs stiffness but doesn't want to invest the dollars as you have done with glass. I did the same thing from below but I don't have a hull liner. The deck sag can come from deteriorated plywood and it can come from the deterioration of the support for the compression column. I had to repair both areas.

Is this a question of distributing forces over a larger area without creating hard points where the glass might crack?

I have the same 1977 Hunter 30 and am looking at the same job next year. Do you have any pictures of what I would expect to see inside the cabin top? I plan to use a Garhauer mast plate under the mast base to attach the lead pulleys for lines run to the cockpit. That way I eliminate 24 through deck holes(6 pulleys -4holes each) that could possibly leak in the future.

Rad Don't have any pics, all that was under the mast step was a piece of plywood inbeded within the glass. I cut it out from the top and replaced it. Be sure to get a roller for fiberglass, otherwise you won't be happy with the results. Its important to lay it up and keep the air out of it. Also of course be sure your pressure post is solid and on a firm base.
