Deck Shoes and Daughter acceptance

I needed a new pair of deck shoes and noticed my son's skateboard type sneakers. They have a neutral waffle gum rubber sole (non marking), and sturdy leather/fabric uppers. So I went down to my local discount athletic store (Big 5) and found a great pair of $60 shoes for $20. They are sturdy and have padding in the right places. And the best part is when my "fashion expert" 17 year old daughter saw me with my new "skater" shoes, the comment was "New shoes Dad? Those are cool". So now my daughter will hang out with me at the marina, as long as I have my new shoes on!

Kinda' funny Bob.

You shop around to pay $20. for deck shoes but pay someone else $100. to change your oil. I can buy two really good pair of deck shoes for the 90. bucks I save changing my own oil. Takes me about twenty minutes including the filter. :)

Vans

Bob, I have a pair of Vans. They are skateboarder type also. Sadly, they are pretty well worn out. No other sneakers or deckshoes come close to the stability nor the grip that they offer. I have found no down side to them. I have a wide foot and can not readily find another pair. If you see a pair of 12 wides, Kindly get a phone number for me. Color is secondary to functionality. I'd save them for heavy weather sailing. great choice, Mike D

Sperry's

Great story! But, is it me or is anyone else finding that ever since Sperry went to China to have their traditional Topsiders made, they just aren't the same...and not worth the money?

Timbs

I gave over Sperrys long ago... total trash. The shame of it is that the Timbies are going the way of last year's model too. Seems the proportion of their market that is REAL yachties gets smaller and smaller each season. I buy deck shoes at the Timberland outlet in Rehoboth, pretty much a pair every February now ($50). My daughters have heretofore accepted this. Other dads from the softball team wear them too, so it's cool for a DAD kind of thing. But recently whilst I was assisting a student assigned to the in-school suspension room one of the other 'delinquents' happened to observe my footgear and commented (with obvious approval): 'Yo, Mr C's rockin' the Timbs.' They all wear the hiking boots, you know. In this job THAT acceptance can be worth more than that of the ever-dutiful daughters'. JC
