Deck Sheaves

Has anyone out there had a problem with the deck sheaves for the main and jib halyards? Ther eis a 1/2" shaft for the pulley wheels that has a tendancy to work its way out of the deck and get lost. I suspect that there should be some retainer clips to hold it in place but don't have enough info on where the clips should be located. Can someone supply a description of the assembly? The original seems to have made its way over the side.

Here's the setup ...

ed, i don't see any responses to your question so maybe i can help a little bit. my 23.5 had all the hardware in place when i started and with crazy dave's help i got the assembly apart, replaced the sheaves, put a new divider between the main and jib halyards, and got it all back together again. when i took it apart, to my surprise i found that the 1/2" shaft was not secured at all. dave suggested that i would have dig out adhesive but there was none there. here's the setup: the shaft has a head, pin or other stop inside the deck to the aft of the sheaves (see diagram). when the shaft is pulled forward the head of the shaft stops it from pulling all the way through and coming out of the forward end of the support. in order to pull the shaft back into the forward position, i had to drill a hole in the end of the shaft, put in a SS screw and use a nylon line to pull it through the sheaves, washers, spacer, through the forward support and then daubed the end with a bit of adhesive/sealant. i'm wondering if perhaps what has happened on your boat is that the shaft fell inside the deck on the aft end, and is lost somewhere between the deck and cabin liner. i can't figure out how to access that area without undesirable major surgery. hope this helps some. - ed a.

Hey Ed, I have a 94 23.5 with the same problem. All the parts are in place with mine, but they are severly deteriorated by sunlight. Did you get the divider and sheaves from Hunter? Also, did you have to tap the shaft back clear of the sheaves, washers, etc with a mallet and punch, or were you able to just push it back with your finger? Thanks Alan Long

Finger Loose

hi alan, with no load on the sheaves i just put a phillips head screwdriver to the end of the shaft and it slid right back. the sheaves are 2" outside diameter delrin material by schaefer (PN62-051) about $7.50 from west marine. try this page: http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/commerce/command/ProductDisplay?prmenbr=201&prrfnbr=372&outlet= the spacer i made out of some plastic material (it should be about 1/8" to 3/16" i think) and made a cardboard template to the boat. it was a pain getting the parts on the shaft and pulling the shaft through but i did it. and lost a lot of hair scratching my head! ed

Same problem on a H26

I had the same problem on my '94 H26. I cross drilled a 5/32" hole in the shaft near the forward fiberglass support, added a 1/2" washer and 1/8" cotter pin. This set up allowed for future removal of the shaft, yet kept the shaft from working out.

Cotter Pin Works

I ended up drilling a hole through the shaft just inside the the housing next to the forward sheave and using a hairpin cotter pin to hold it. A couple of flat washers drilled out to fit the shaft keep the pin and sheaves from rubbing the deck surface on the ends. The assembly can be removed if needed. I would suggest some caulk so the assembly does not leak into the cabin during foul weather. Many thanks for the info.
