Hi, I am a new owner of a 1975 Catalina 22. The previous owner did a great job of restoring/repainting the hull & deck and she looks pretty good. The one thing I don't like is that when he repainted the deck he added a lot of antiskid paint that has (in my opinion) too much sand in it. Parts of the port deck are like rough sandpaper! It's uncomfortable to sit on it. I would like to re-do the deck if possible. Does anyone know of the best way to get this @#$% sand off the deck and repaint? Would i strip the paint/sand off or would I polish or scrape it off?

I'd try

Sanding it off, of course your going to go through some paper. But that's the way I'd do it. Trying to strip it would labor intense not to mention trying to keep it where you want it, has the hull been painted as well?

yes...

Hi, thanks for the response. Yes, the whole boat was repainted. It's looks really good. I could live with the sandpaper-like hull if I had to. But how would I sand off sand? Other than with lots of elbow grease?

Sandy

Sailposer: When I did my cockpit floor, I used a very fine, screened beachsand. Sprinkled it onto wet paint. Then without any sanding, gave it a second paint coat after first had dried. Turned out good. So maybe you can sand (or not sand) yours a little, then paint over and have it come out ok. Would try it on a small area first. Adequate nonskid is better than pretty-but-slippery.
