Hello all,

I am interested in running my control lines aft to the cockpit but I am running into an issue with where to put my deck organizer. There is not much space between the hand rail and the channel for the companion way hatch. My plan was to have two spring loaded stand up blocks just to the port side of the mast that led the lines into a double sheave deck organizer and then aft to two cam-cleats at the cockpit.

Any thoughts?

Scott. I am a former O'Day 20 (1979 model) owner. There is enough room to do this in that channel to run both the Jib and Main Halyard to the cockpit, but you need to get that double sheave angled perfectly! Sorry I wish I had a picture. I remember it took me a couple mounting attempts.

Mark, Did you just use a typical two sheave deck organizer? Did you have to use any other accessories to direct the lines properly? Also, did you find this to be a good upgrade to the boat? I am attempting to set it up so I can sail solo without having to rig the tiller up while I run to the deck and raise etc. Last question...what did you use to secure the lines at the cockpit? Cam-cleat, clutch, jam cleat...?

Thanks,

Scott

Yes, I used a typical 2 sheave organizer. It was a model T38/2 shown here (Scroll down the page) - I'm not sure who makes it though. At my mast I fitted a Boom Hanger (Shown here - RF463 I think) and to that I fitted a double block to run the halyards through to the double sheave. On the port side of the end of the cabin I installed a Cam Cleat for each Halyard. I wanted to install a double rope clutch but too much $$!

This was probably the most important mod I made to the boat as I sail almost exclusively single handed. The big problem singled handed on that boat, was when going to the mast to raise a sail after getting it pointed into the wind, my weight up there would cause the boat almost immediately to fall off the wind, and I was back at the tiler before I had a chance to raise the sail, getting her back to windward.

Having the halyards to the cockpit allowed me to keep one hand on the tiller and I could use the other hand to raise the sail!

Sorry - my mistake. It was not a double block I fit at the mast - it was two single blocks, so they would allow different angles to the double sheave.

Mark,

Thank you so much for taking the time to research that for me. It was very helpful. Any other important things that you did to your oday that I should know about? Any helpful hints or tips for that boat specifically. I have owned it about 6 months now and have learned so much.

Thanks,

Scott

Hey Scott, another idea is what I did to run my lines aft. At the mast base, I used 2 stand up blocks running fore and aft. They then go outboard at 90 degree angles to two for aft turning blocks, then back to cam cleats. Works well. One the other side I have the jib furler and the topping lift.
You gotta get a tiller tamer ($30) and worth every penny and then some. That way you can let the tiller go for minutes at a time to handle other tasks like opening beverages or other important things.

Scott - the only other sailing thing I did was to mount a boom vang. My 20 didn't have one when I bought it, and found that sailing on a reach or downwind the boom really wanted to lift. I think most O'Day 20's came with a Vang so perhaps you have one already. I did do quite a few "comfort" modifications though - added a 120 Watt solar panel on an arch, added a TV, stereo, made a floor for the port lazarette so I could install 2 120AH Deep Cycle Batteries..

My 25 doesn't have a whole lot of room to run the halyards back to the cockpit but I managed anyhow. I used Garhaurer deck organizers with 4 sheaves so I could run other lines back down the road.

Rick,
Thanks for those photos. I plan on doing the same on my 25. Photos help.
