I found the recent discussion regarding singlehanding an H23 very interesting, more so because I am facing the same situation myself. I think the first sensible step is to lead all the lines (including a jib downhaul) back to the cockpit. Does anyone have any experience with this? How about some slick ideas? I have read Cardwell's "Sailing Big On A Small Boat" and while it has some good general information, it seems to be biased more towards the Catalina 22 and is short on specifics for the H23 (didn't even have a picture). Here is something I saw on a Precision 23. The owner had installed a plate with turned up edges under the base of the mast tabernacle. The upturned edges of the plate had holes in it like a toe rail. Turning blocks for the halyards and reefing line were shackled in these holes, so no new holes had to be drilled in the deck for padeyes. Does a winch now have to be mounted on the cabin top? If so, is there a specific location for it, kind of like the embedded plate in the cabintop of the H23.5? How about the reefing line/topping lift/outhaul, all of which are cleated under the boom at the gooseneck? Looks like I am going to need a bunch of turning blocks/deck organizers/rope clutches.... Copy the Catalina 22

I just visited with a Cat 22 owner this afternoon and the cockpit is much better orgainized for single hand sailing. DO NOT copy the H23.5. Don't put the winches on the cabin roof because they're unreachable there. I have no idea what Hunter expects you to do with the Port side winch.....use it for spare parts, I guess. There is no logical way to tail the winch into the cleat. The angles are all wrong. The only line thru the boom that causes me trouble is the reefing line. Reefing is done when it's windy and having to crawl up to the mast is a problem. Use rope clutches so you have better control on the halyards too. Hunter's open and uncluttered cockpit is nice for socializing but not for sailing. You could end up with padeyes and pulleys everwhere and no deck to walk on too. I only added 2 things to the H23.5. A downhaul for the jib and the Autopilot. Kind of cop out, huh? Ken S/V Wouff Hong

Its not that hard.

I did my 23 a few years ago. The winch comes off the mast and goes on the cabin top. Rope clutches are a must. Using the plate under the mast is a must also. When the lines turn to go back to the cockpit a deck organizer will not work. You need to get harkin blocks that will through bolt to the cabin top because of the angle of the cabin top and the sliding of the hatch. Harkin also sells a block and cam cleat that will bolt to the bottom of the boom for the outhaul. You will not need to worry about strength because the deck is wood cored. A down haul for the jib can run along the stanchions and too the jib winches. Because of the width of the cabin top at the point where lines need to turn at the cabin top you may not be able to run everthing back. If you have any more ? you can E-mail me at cliffr@bright.net I also raced the boat with alot of success. Cliff

linees

The 23 wing keel had two different masts when being built. The first was a Kenyon/Isomat and the other was a Z-Spar. If your mast is a Kenyon, to led the lines aft you will probably need to secure the hardware to the deck by through bolting and please use a goog sealant for example 5200. If the mast is a Z-Spar, then you may have the mast step plate with a flange that has holes. If that is the case, adding turning blocks will be easy but I would suggest the blocks from Z-spar which you can call Tom Thomas at 904-462-3760

Block mounting plate

I used to own a Catalina 22 and found a plate that fit under the mast with all kinds of mounting holes for blocks, etc. I will try to find where I bought that and post it here later this week.
