Has anyone out there experienced difficulty raising and lowering their main form the cockpit using these deck organisrs? On my 29.5 I have the three-sheave organisers (one of each) on both the Port and s/b side of the cabin roof. The main halyard is 1/2" and I can get the main up around 60% of the way from the cockpit, but then I have to go to the mast to do the rest. The sheaves are free, and because I can raise the main from the mast, I wonder if it is just an allignment issue form there, through the tunel to the clutch. Anyone encountered this or needed to do any modifications? Thaks Neil

common complaint

This is a common complaint... this is often due to several possible causes... misalignment ... oversized lines running through organizers that add friction .... blocks are in need of attention.... organizers need maintenance ... they should not be problematic but I know lots of folks that have the same complaint... but I also know that they have not maintained their blocks or organizers... not sure what the real issue is ... I have had a h28 and now a h37.5 and do not have a problem... just my prospective.

Suggest smaller line.

Neil: I suggest that you try a smaller line size. I had this problem on my H'31. I went from 1/2" Sta-set-x to 7/16" Sta-set line and my problems went away.

Physics at work

If you want to stop a boat at the dock, simply throw the line around a pole or cleat to 90% and it will cut the load in half. The corollary is that pulling a line through the organizer is twice as strenuous. The easier way is to stand at the mast and pull from there.

29.5 Main

If your setup is anything like mine, our 29.5 has a dutchman and an extra large roach mainsail. I have raised the main fully from the cockpit, but if the extra hands are available, so much easier at the foot of the mast. The extra guidelines for the dutchman and larger roach just make raising it from the cockpit (without using winches) next to impossible. If the extra hands are there, I go to the mast, raise it about 80-90% of the way then the admiral holds tight on the halyard until I get back in the cockpit to lock it off in the organizer before I put a few wraps in the winch and complete the raising of the main.

What I Did on my 29.5

1.I had the same problem when I got the boat last year. 2.I change the block on the mainsail head with a better low friction one, larger and that new block can be lock in the sideway position so no more twisting of the line as it goes up ... 3.I change the mainsail slugs for Allslip black Teflon slide. Oh My god the difference it made !! 4.I use a little bit of JIG-A-LOO (it is a non stain lub spray for plastic windows and anything sliding, at Home Hardware store) That stuff is so good on the blocks, furling ball bearings, traveller, deck organiser and specially on main sail slugs. It makes everything a breeze to slide. 5.I change the line for smaller spectra line (I know it is $$$ but no stretch at all, light and easy to use) I can raise my main from the cockpit all the way up to the top of the mast with my bare hand and no efforts and I finish the last 6 inches with the winch for good tension on windy days.
