I have been looking at Catalina 38's and was wondering if anyone has had problems with moisture or core rot on the 38 Cat starboard side? Has anyone experienced any moisture, delanate problems in their Catalina models worth mentioning to a prospective buyer?

wet spot

We found some wet spots in the cabin roof during my survey (moisture meter) but I've found no soft spots, delamination, ect. I removed and rebedded EVERYTHING on the deck and again found no rot. She's sealed up tight now and I'm keeping an eye on things. You have to remember 2 things with boats like this; 1)they're old -they aren't going to be perfect 2) anything can be fixed and you can do 99.9% of repairs yourself for a fraction of the cost.

not that much of a problem

Danny there is most likely no older boats out there that don't have some delamant problems. When people loose interest in there boats they like to let them sit unused and unmaintained for a few years before they get the bright idea to sell it. The fix is inexpensive and easy, just drill a few holes and pump in some epoxy. Hay Patrick, are you sure that you want to anchor on a lee shore like that, if the anchor pops loose and drags you could have a bad day.

My surveyor is saying no

My surveyor, who is inexperienced told me last week to forget the Cat 38 because I would not be finished with the repair and couldn't get insurance. I basically told him he didn't know what he was talking about.I called a older experienced partner of his to finish what he started.

fired my surveyor

My surveyor said no, I said bye. Then called someone else actually two other surveyors who laughed when I told them the advice he gave me. I found out he is uncertified, inexperienced and surveys exclusively power boats he doesn't even know what a boom is, I believe. A good surveyor should be able to tell if a boat is delaminated or has condesation problems. This guy is so unprofessional he didn't inventory or check the holding tanks, electrical equipment, sails, etc. I don't think I'm paying him.
