Deck leaks

I own a 1980 Hunter 27 and just discovered a deck leak. Where the bow pulpit is fastened to the deck I found water had leaked in over the winter. The pulpit is fastened by 4 bolts where the deck is joined to the hull. Water is leaking in from one of the bolts, you can see where the water leaked down the inside of the hull. What is the best fix and best sealant? Remove the pulpit and rebed it in silicone? I appreciate any and all help. Thanks.

Doug, Read this

Read the enclosed link... I would remove the pulpit, drill out the holes, fill them with Marine-Tex and then tap for new holes. Then rebed the pulpit.. Jim

Bedding materials

I have GREAT suggess using plumber's rope caulking as bedding/sealing when replacing any through hull (or deck) fittings. I is easy to clean up, leaves no residue and can be removed at a later time very easily.

Just read an article...

either in Latitudes & Attitudes or Good Old Boat, where someone used bicycle inner tube pieces as gasket material along with a normal sealant. I think if you do something like Droop suggests, either Marine-Tex or epoxy, and then re-bed, the addition of the inner tube might eliminate leaks for a long, long time.

When we purchased our 1983 27 SL the pulpit was a little loose but I did not pay it much attention until we went out on a rainy weekend and ended up with cold, wet feet. Next morning I took apart the wood coverings, got a tube of 5200 applied it and tightened the nuts (the pulpits) It has been dry ever since.
