Hi Everyone - We have recently become an H37 Cutter owner and thanks to all involved in this site for the good info that helped us make the dedcision. The previous owners have done a good deal of the age related upgrades and repairs (mast step, holding tank, port lights etc.) However I have just noticed that when walking the deck close to the cabin seam I hear a very slight crackle sound as I take each step. This sound was not evident during my first inspections or I just missed it. The survey didn't pick it up either and the decks passed the tap and moisture meter tests. I suspect I have some delamination due to age or previous water intrusion. (at present there are on obvious leaks)(that I can find) Is this a common problem with age and what is the best way to fix it ? Am I looking at taking the deck down and reglassing ? RobL P.S. We really like the boat.

Hello Neighbor

Hello Rob, We purchased our 1979 37c last year and we as well have a similar noise to what you describe when we walk on the side decks. Our vessel also passed the same moisture checks you described. I have not been able to detect any flexing of the side deck when I hear the noise and we have no interior leaks at the accessory mounting screw holes below this area inside the cabin. So far I am not concerned but I am also interested in the other replies to your post.

Hey Rob

Must be a Puget Sound phenomina. Same thing was happening on my 85 37C at the forward corners of the cockpit sole. I drilled a bunch of small holes about 1/2 inch deep and injected epoxy from a syringe. It stopped the crunching. All the wood that came up from the drilling was dry. My guess is just some voids in the manufacuring process. It crunches because dry, so when it stops crunching then start to worry. If you have painted decks, not to hard to do some drill and fill on the painted sufaces and then repaint, or just wait until you need to repaint and do some filling work then.

Deck delam. and autopilot....

Rob, I have Ed's sister ship. When I replaced my ports a couple a years ago, I found voided areas and filled with epoxy. I do have some cracking noises in that area also but not concerned with the integrity of the deck. As far as the autopilot is concerned, I followed Ed's advice and installed the WP30 and very pleased with the performance. I have attached the link in the photo forum to my installation.

Deck delam.

Here's a temporary solution: Drill a hole where the creaking occurs, inject Git-rot into the hole (be careful for spillage and dripping inside), cover with Marinetex. Should shore up the creaking for the season until such time that you can do a more extensive repair.

leaks

Check the archives... apparently leaks through the dorade boxes were fairly common.
