I am in the process of trying to locate a good cat 27 or 30 in the 70's area. one that I really like is a cat 27 1979 model but the one that I have located has a three inch crack on the top of the deck (that appears to be in the top gelcoat) but it runs forward from the mast and makes a small turn of about 1/2 inch. there is no indication of stress and there is no cracks in the cabin area of the load carrying beam.Does any one have any ideas or similar situations. I hate to not buy a good boat but I also would hate to get stung. thanks Mic in calif. mic11@gte.net

Might warrant a survey

If you're serious, & the price is really right, I think I'd have a surveyor come out & check that one out. Could be just gelcoat crazing but it sounds more like a crack which could be indicative of serious problems, like rotten coring under the mast, delamination, etc. If it's not such a fantastic deal, wait awhile. There are always 27s on the market - knew a guy in Puget Sound who picked up one for $1000 & it was actually in pretty good shape! LaDonna
